What to do in San Francisco: a local’s guide

San Francisco has a special place in our hearts—likely because Kindred was founded here. It is truly a city like no other. From the moment you arrive, it’s impossible not to be awestruck by the beautiful Victorian architecture, the Golden Gate Bridge, streets so steep they have stairs, and expansive views of the San Francisco Bay.

But with only so many hours in a day, how does one make the most of their time here? That’s where we come in with some of the best things to see and do while visiting the City by the Bay.

1. Compton’s Coffee House

While this little café might look unassuming from the outside, the experience is anything but. When you step inside Compton’s Coffee House you are greeted with a warm and cozy ambiance, just like the delicious coffee and pastries they serve. What makes this local favorite stand out from the dozens of coffee shops in the area (and larger chains) is that they make their syrups in-house and pastries fresh daily. And to add to the experience, all of the baristas are both friendly and experts in their craft, so they can answer any and all coffee related questions you may have.

2. Pizzeria Delfina

San Francisco might not be known for its pizza in the same way that New York, Chicago, and even Detroit are—but that’s because people don’t know what wonders it has to offer. This is where Pizzeria Delfina steps in. Founded by James Beard Award winners and inspired by the incredible Neapolitan pies of Italy, this pizza will blow your taste buds out of the water. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, give their famous clam pie a taste—you won’t regret it!

3. Pacifica State Beach

Only a short drive from the city is one of California’s top surfing destinations. If you don’t have your own boards and wetsuits, no need to worry—you can rent them from one of the multiple vendors in the area and take a surf lesson while you’re at it. If surfing isn’t quite your thing, you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery at sunset or play volleyball with friends. As a bonus, the beach is always well-maintained and never too crowded with tourists.

4. Smitten Ice Cream

Smitten's Ice Cream is a San Francisco institution. The shop is known for its made-to-order cones and a wide variety of flavors, which are churned fresh right in front of you. If you’re vegan or just don’t do dairy—don’t despair! Smitten has options to accommodate everyone, using only unprocessed, real, locally sourced, and sustainable ingredients.

5. Healdsburg

An hour away (and the epitome of wine country living), Healdsburg is one of the most beautiful and relaxing getaways north of the city. While Napa might be the more well-known wine country destination, Healdsburg is the one that locals flock to for the most authentic wine country experience. While here, spend the day at tasting rooms in the town square, bike to wineries along Dry Creek Road, and try some amazing local cuisine. The ambiance is laid back, and the wine is always top-tier.

6. City Lights Bookstore

A necessary stop for anyone who claims to be a book lover, this local gem was founded in 1953 by the poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti. With a specialty in world literature, every nook and cranny of this store is overflowing with books, inviting you to escape into a fantasy land, take on a new adventure, or brush up on your favorite work of nonfiction. The store also has a wall of staff and visitor recommendations, giving fun and friendly guidance to any new reader who steps into the store.

7. Point Reyes

If shucking your very own oyster is something that’s on your bucket list, then Point Reyes is the spot for you. After a quick drive through gorgeous rolling fields and majestic redwood trees, pop over to Hog Island to grab a bag of shuck-it-yourself oysters or a pre-shucked back from Marshall Store (we recommend the barbecue flavor specifically). After you fill up on fresh oysters, head over to Drake’s Bay to see the elephant seals, kayak, and visit the famous Point Reyes Lighthouse.

8. Amoeba Music

Girl, put your records on and stop by the California institution of Amoeba Music. For those nostalgic for records and CDs, this is a goldmine of endless rows of music from all eras and genres. The staff is incredible at finding niche records to fit anyone’s taste, and you can even stop by the store to listen to your favorite band, as Amoeba often hosts concerts.

9. Dandelion Chocolate

Come here on a cold fall day for some world-renowned hot chocolate, brownies, and handmade candy bars. Everything at this favorite sweet spot is made from scratch, with the chef using fresh cacao pods to start the process of making all the confectioneries. If you want to see how the magic is made or learn how to do it yourself, Dandelion also offers chocolate-inspired tours and tastings, as well as classes for all levels of aspiring pastry chefs.

10. Breakfast at Rose's Café

This absolute favorite among locals to the Cow Hollow neighborhood and the wider SF folk is well worth a visit. A European-inspired bistro-café with Parisian street vibes and Italian culinary inspirations, Rose's is a must for brunch. Sip on a cappuccino and watch the world go by, or get stuck into a feast with friends (the smoked salmon pizza is to die for). The choice is yours and the best part is, the patio is dog friendly, so bring along your four-legged friend!

11. Lyon Street Steps

If brunch at Rose's is weighing you down or you've discovered some of the locals' other favorite breakfast places, some exercise might be in order. For the authentic sporty SF experience, you must jog up the Lyons Street steps (a two-block stretch of steps with outstanding views of the bay). Not quite feeling that level of exertion? Walking up them will do the trick just as well. While you're in the area, take a peek at the impressive homes on Billionaire's Row.

12. The Princess Diaries house

If you're a fan of The Princess Diaries, you probably already know that there are a few iconic locations from that film in San Francisco. One you certainly don't want to miss is the former firehouse on Brazil Street in the Excelsior District. This unique location was used as the home of Mia and her mother. Sadly, it's not up for home swapping on Kindred, but some amazing SF locals' homes are! If you want to see other filming locations, check out the Doheny Mansion and the stunning mansion at 2601 Lyon Street.

13. Presidio Main Parade

If the sun's out, the Main Parade in the Presidio is full of locals enjoying the weather and each other's company. The green is lined with gorgeous historical buildings and with spectacular views of the bay—you really can't go wrong.

14. Alta Plaza Park

Another beautiful SF green space not to be missed is Alta Plaza Park. Ascend the stairs, and you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views and fresh air so good you'll want to jar it. A perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and take a few moments to yourself.
